I am a Curator at the City of Edmonton Heritage Collections and was just entering the quilt featured on p.69 in the "300 Years of Canada's Quilts " books into our collections database. I searched the quilt block pattern name "Swallow in the Path" and found your blog. We have a copy of the 300 Years of Canada's Quilts book in our reference library and I was disappointed to see the misprint saying that the original quilt is in the Glenbow. I see that you noticed the discrepancy as well. So I thought I'd write to let you know that the quilt that has a block of it photographed on p. 69 of the book is indeed held in the City of Edmonton Heritage Collections. I'd be happy to send you a colour, full photograph of the quilt if you'd like. If so, let me know, my email is cms.artifacts@edmonton.ca Thanks for sharing your beautiful quilt online! They are 1" squares and there are about 4800 of them. I found a way to put them together pretty quickly. It takes about 4.5 hours to do a "full row" which is between 275 - 350 depending on where I am in the pattern. Here's a blog post where I describe the piecing the individual squares if you want yet another perspective:

http://www.theboredzombie.com/2013/04/bowser-clown-car-postage-stamp-quilt-am.html

Wont be long and I will be posting an update (I've made it to the 1/2 point!) with some cutting tips. There are large sections of the same colour in this picture, so even if I choose to do a base unit of 1-inch squares, a lot of it will be done in bigger pieces. So, I redid the picture once more on Pic 2 Pat (I think I've redone it at least 5 times) and came up with a picture with a 1-inch square base where the picture will just cover the top of the mattress, with only a slight overhang on the sides, so that most of the overhang on the quilt will be done in borders. That way the Bluenose will not be hanging over the side of the bed. :-) The biggest section of actual 1-inch squares will be the water, but that only takes up 1/4 of the picture. This (hopefully) final rendition of the Bluenose II will require 75 different colours. I need to get some ink cartridges for my colour printer and start collecting blue fabric. I used this technique on my allotment and it's brilliant! The trouble with weeds is that the seeds can lie dormant in the soil for years and years (some for decades apparently) and if you disturb them by digging or tilling it can spur them into growth. There's a little info here, but I'm sure you'll find lots on the web :) http://www.green-and-simple-living.com/organic-weed-control.html Hope it helps!Stephiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09461286927746997845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5201499384040045485.post-52615834895934025482013-06-11T00:10:32.371-07:002013-06-11T00:10:32.371-07:00Good job on making that work in the end, Laura! There's plenty of parking at the nearest mall and we wouldn't have to fight for parking at the actual site. Or, I suppose, they could change venues to a place where there is more parking available, and maybe a bigger site, so it wouldn't seem so crowded inside (though I don't know that it was that crowded since I never went in. I could only surmise based on the number of vehicles outside).Laura Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00874889561929236906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5201499384040045485.post-465288745050255532013-06-10T08:13:33.329-07:002013-06-10T08:13:33.329-07:00One of my colleagues at work has a red Sierra. Not much maneuvering room there.
I can relate to the struggles of parking your truck in the suburbs - not something I even like to think about. Fortunately, I live in a small town with a double wide driveway - and I can even get the truck into the garage!
I was never much good at parallel parking at the best of times. I've just basically given it up since buying the truck.
I wish I could afford something small and economical like your Cube in addition to my truck, but I'd never want to have to replace the truck with it.
